Keeping some financial independence
Sharing everything is fine. Losing access isn't.
However you share money, it's healthy for each person to understand the household finances and have some access in their own name.
Good habits
- Both partners know the accounts, bills and logins
- Each person has at least one account and card in their own name
- Each person keeps some credit history of their own
- Both stay involved in big decisions
When it isn't okay
If a partner controls all the money, blocks access to accounts or takes your pay, that can be financial abuse. The National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) offers confidential help.
